NAV 2009 Mainstream Support Ends January 13, 2015

Like with all new releases, old released get discontinued. That’s how it goes with software. And for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, it’s not different. Yesterday, NAV 2015 was released to customers .. and today I got the message when the latest supported version (which is currently NAV 2009) is going out of support.

And you might have figured it out from the title: the mainstream support for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Ends January 13, 2015.

What does this mean?

Well, customers (on a service plan) will still be able to access benefits, like:

  • Previously released upgrades, updates, service packs, fixes and Reg/tax updates
  • Self-help support through KB articles and online content
  • Unlimited online training
  • Paid support will be available through the length of the extended support, which ends January 2020 .. 5 years later.

So in English … no new bugs/reg/taxupdates/servicepacks/ … will be worked on, no extra work will be done on the 2009 release, unless you’re on the right service plan .. and you pay extra for it.

For a partner?

Let me try to think a little further .. what it would mean for a partner.

I know many partners still support their customer base far before 2009. At least we do (we have 280 customers – no they’re not all running 2013 or 2009 .. There are still customers on 3.6, 4.00, 5.00 … and all the minor versions in between) .. and a bunch of other partners I know do that as well. Let’s call it “customer is king” (like we say in Flemish).

When NAV 2009 is/was supported, Microsoft was still providing the partners all objects for classic as well as role tailored (Classic reports, RDLC reports, forms, pages, … ). Just because it was still supported to run 2009 in classic mode. That way, it was fairly easy to downgrade those objects (the delta’s) to previous versions of NAV.

When 2009 is not supported anymore, Microsoft will not provide us with any classic-only objects!

So, downgrading those solutions, those tax-updates, those legal updates … stuff the partner did as a service for their customers .. is going to become VERY difficult. For example: As far as I know .. there is only a transformation tool from forms to pages, not from pages to forms.. . We will have to see what was changed on pages, and transform that somehow to form-level .. . You can imagine this is going to be nasty..

We all knew this was coming though! Since Classic was completely killed in 2013 .. we all know there was going to be a point of no return. Well, I guess this is it. Now you know the deadline. So I do hope you took the time to get yourself organized for this.

One conclusion. Time for your customer to upgrade. And the new version Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 is perfect to move to! Check out this landing page of Luc van Vugt, to find lots of blog-entries.

  1. It’s not likely, but I hope the Microsoft puts together a marketing/partner package “NAV 2015 for Classic Users”. We have a lot of clients on classic versions as well, but to talk them through reasons to upgrade to 2015 means we can’t hand them a single official document saying “why upgrade”. We have to pull together all the reasons from 2009, 2009 R2, 2013, 2013 R2, and 2015 in a way that speaks to an existing, on-premise customer. Not even sure the best way to ask for such a thing.

Yes, you’re so right. It’s not an easy story to tell the customers.

    1. Well, there sort of is: http://www.catapulterp.com/nav-upgrade-guide/ Very well done, but don’t expect a seasoned NAV veteran to be convinced by it, though. But it speaks the language of the decision makers.

  2. Does it also mean Microsoft won’t sell object numbers for older licenses either?
